2007 MCDC Spring Training

The MCDC will be presenting two workshops, dealing with Geographic Information Systems and Web Data Access. There will be no fees or other charges associated with these workshops, but registration is required and space is limited. Each of the GIS workshops will be given from 9 AM to 2 PM, with an hour break for lunch. The web data workshops will be from 9 AM to 4 PM with a 1.5 hour break for lunch. Parking tags will be available for participants.

The workshops will be presented at three locations around the state as follows:

Enrollment limit: 25 each

Parking will be available at the University parking garage on University Avenue (Northeast of the campus just west of College Avenue). Stewart Hall is located south of the parking garage. [See Campus Map]

Enrollment limits: 15 for GIS, 20 for web data.

If coming from the north to campus, access the circle drive from National, a couple blocks south of Monroe.

  If coming to campus from the south, drive north on National to Monroe.  Turn left on Monroe.  Turn left at next intersection (stop sign).  Turn left at next corner, which will take you back to National.  Turn right on National and the circle drive is about a block south.

To get to the metered visitor lot from National, turn onto Monroe (same as above) and the metered visitor lot is immediately on your left. Cheek Hall is the building labeled 54 (white number on black circle), just south of Madison and immediately west of National Ave. [See Campus Map]

Presenters and Topics:

John Blodgett, Office of Social and Economic Data Analysis, Columbia, MO :
   Accessing Census Data on the Web

These will be hands on workshops where students will be able to work on practice exercises.

Topics will include:

  • "Best of MCDC" web site tour, covering: 2k Census Pop profiles; Cure for the Common Codes; MABLE/Geocorr; Population Estimates page/web application and CAPS.
  • Intro to using American FactFinder (at Census Bureau). A brief introduction with emphasis on accessing metadata for census files and latest American Community Survey data.
  • The MCDC Data Archive and the Uexplore/Dexter web tools. This will be about 70% of the workshop. There will be lots of Hands-on practice exercises, including several dealing with the 2005 American Community Survey data.
  • Jim Harlan, Missouri Spatial Center, UMC Dept of Geography :
       Introduction to GIS

  • Exploring available Missouri GIS census data on the Internet via ArcIMS, etc.
  • Downloading and importing various GIS and demographic data into ArcGIS.
  • Practical Application and linkage of spatial GIS data and non-spatial demographic data using ArcGIS.
  • Introduction to GeoPDF files for Missouri using Map_to_PDF and GeoPDF_toolbar.
