Some Census data sets (ACS, in particular) include a code called geographic component. This is a two-character code that indicates that portion of an area that meets a location-based test such as "in a metropolitan area" or "in a rural place". Generally these codes are available only for counties, states, and larger areas.
The Census Bureau doesn't publish a master list of all geographic component codes, but MCDC has compiled a complete list of all the ones we know about. Component codes used in ACS data products are shown in boldface. This list is also available in Excel format.
